I’m back! I will be sharing what I’ve learned from the Yoga Retreat this week (and probably next week, too) over on Instagram. I’ll also post my thoughts on the training, studio and teachers in a post coming soon. One of the big reasons I love yoga is the way it challenges me mentally and physically. It allows me to strengthen my body at the same time that I can de-stress my mind. As some of you may know, mental health is very important to me, having experienced my own struggles with an eating disorder, depression and anxiety in the past. I don’t think it ever fully leaves you. All of that said, this post is not about mental health or yoga, not really anyways.
When was the last time you did something for yourself? From setting aside an hour to read, to soaking in a bubble bath, doing face masks with your best friend or hiking a trail you’ve been wanting to see. I believe making time for yourself can lead to more success. They can be smaller or larger routines, and they can take up more or less of your day. What matters is that you take the time to do you.
Now, I know just how difficult, and sometimes obscene it sounds, to make time for yourself. We live in a world where the focus is not primarily on mind, body and soul health; but on your ability to multi-task, clear your schedule for the good of a company, and believe that everything you do now will be worth it when you retire.
News Flash: What is Retirement? Does it even exist anymore? The short answer is No.
So, how is self-care, you-time and personal joy going to help you be more successful? Well, if you think about it, making time for yourself allows you to de-stress. Aside from the obvious weight lifted from our shoulders, less stress means less burn-out. If you’ve experienced the thrill of burning out, you know it’s not so thrilling and more detrimental to every aspect of your life. It creates a cycle of falling behind, trying to create excuses that are better than “My Mental Health is at Risk”, and never fully catching up. This cycle inevitably creates a depressive state where you harm not only yourself but the relationships around you. Sounds fun right? Totally worth the retirement years to come.
Removing this unneeded, unnecessary, and completely avoidable stress, will create more time for what matters. Those things that give you joy, give your body the chance to breathe easy. In doing so, it leads to a clearer brain. Have you been forgetting things lately? Is your brain impossible to turn off at night? Your brain is a muscle. After going to the gym for a workout, it’s important to give your muscles time to rest and recover. The same goes for your brain. When was the last time you truly allowed yourself to power down?
Your purpose in life is NOT to constantly be three steps ahead. Showing your body and mind some self-care will give you a clearer mind, because there’s less “stuff” trying to push its way to the forefront of your brain. A clearer mind will give you a clearer path on whichever task you may be working on. When you can accomplish tasks with a clear brain, you’re more efficient, and in turn, you’ll see better results and more success.
Again I ask you, when was the last time you did something for yourself? When was the last time you allowed your mind, your body and your soul time to breathe? If you have to think about it, it’s been too long!
My Upcoming Self-Care
The last time I set time aside for myself was Saturday at Yoga; one hour of 100% me-time. I have been enjoying exercise SO MUCH MORE since losing the idea that in order to work out, I had to be on a bike or treadmill. I love Yoga. Every class is unique, challenges my mind and body, and leaves me sweating the same as I would (if not more) than my old workouts at a standard gym. I can’t wait to utilize everything I’ve learned from my retreat and share it here and in my daily living.
